Martha Bishop

Martha Bishop lives in Atlanta, GA, where she performs on viola da gamba, cello, and violone with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, New Trinity Baroque, and occasionally as gamba soloist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. "Spring Unfurled" was written at Hambidge Center for the Arts and Sciences where Martha is a fellow in composition.

An artist faculty member at Emory (gamba) and former faculty at Agnes Scott College (cello and composition), Martha has written for a wide assortment of instruments/voices. Her ensemble works have been performed by Parthenia (NY), the Yukimi Kambe Viol Consort (Japan), Sex Chordae (CA), and the International Euphonium Institute (Atlanta). Solo viol/cello works have been performed by Brent Wissick (NC), Phillip Serna (Chicago) and André Laurent O’Neil (NY).

Music for viola da gamba is published by PRB Publications and works for school string orchestra (with harp) are published by Fountain Music Publications.

The present piece was "won" as an auction piece by the Mockingbird Early Music Ensemble during the 2010 Conclave of the Viola da Gamba Society of America of which Martha is the past Music Director.
